The god of good deeds

How are you going to get to Heaven? Believe it or not, most people think that they are saved and going to heaven or some place like it when they die because they are good and are doing good things for their fellow man and they think that is what they need to do, to make it there.

But what does the Bible say, if you are a Christian, you would I hope understand that you were once not saved and dead in your sins, but now you are saved or made alive through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and you will know that faith is the most gracious gift of God to mankind. This gift does not come from our own righteousness, goodness or any good works that we do. A Christian in short is saved simply by trusting in or having faith in the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ, John 3: 5. Our good works after that should then be lead by the Spirit of God and not because we are saved by them but because of a desire to please God and this is how we know Gods people, by their fruits or good works. James 2: 26.

Many people believe that good works will prevent them from going to Hell, but the Lord Jesus Christ said “many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, in thy name we have done many wonderful works, and then I will profess unto them, I never knew you. Depart from me, you that work iniquity.” Matthew 7: 22-23. I could guess that the people that answered the Lord believed they were Christians. They probably would have been members of the many church organisations in this world today and in the past because they knew they did wonderful things in the Lords name. However the Lord said He did not know them. I hope that you are not one of them and that you have asked the Lord Jesus Christ into your life by believing in Him and you are now living your life for Him.

To think that doing good works for God or just being good is going to save us or get us to Heaven is not what God’s word says we need to do, we need to trust and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and to put on His righteousness because our righteousness is as filthy rags Isaiah 64: 6. If that is case the next verse I will quote tells us, “For if the righteous scarcely be saved where will the ungodly and sinner appear?” 1Peter 4: 18.

In conclusion a Christian will do good works as if they are doing them unto the Lord, Colossians 3: 23. And do these works because they want to do them for God and not for a reward. I politely ask you, have you faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and doing good works for God or are you doing good works for your god of good deeds?
