The Trinity Doctrine

Is it correct?

When reading this article try to see in your mind's eye a different perspective of how you understand God from His Word. Remember that Bible scholars are only human and can get things wrong that includes me, but we know for sure that God’s Word is true and we all need to make it our guide.

Most Christians believe that God exists in three persons but can we find this teaching or understanding clearly in scripture? Are we able to find in fact any scripture that clearly states that God is three persons?

Does the Bible or rather God’s Word refer to God as a trinity or does it use this word? The word trinity means ‘three that agree as one’ or ‘three are one’. This word and meaning is clearly an addition to God’s Word as the word trinity does not appear in God’s Word and this word is also used to teach another doctrine or teaching of God’s Word other than what is in God’s Word. Which in my view is a very bold move when you consider God’s Word warns us clearly not to add to it!

We find many references in God’s Word to the differing explanations or understanding of God and who He is. Can we make the assumption though that these explanations are referring to persons of the Godhead or not? If only some of them are persons as many scholars suggest, there is clearly more differing references of the person of God in His Word than those of the trinity doctrine which creates conjecture or confusion.

The following verse of scripture fondly quoted by those who believe that God is three persons, and I believe is miss quoted, have caused much confusion with many believers and we all know who is the author of confusion, don't we?

Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost (Spirit). Many have concluded that three distinct persons are represented in this passage of scripture. Notice however the Lord said name (singular) not names (plural). I am very sure that the Lord Jesus Christ meant that we should baptise them in His name (singular) as we read in God’s Word…. the Lord Jesus Christ name. Isaiah 9:6-8: For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, (notice His name and who He is) and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Wow! This says that He is our Father or more accurately our heavenly Father, what a wonderful Saviour.

My personal thoughts on how wonderful a God we have are overwhelming joy, peace and wonder that words cannot express. If one contemplates reading Isaiah 53, Corinthians 15: 47, Hebrews 10: 5-7, John 6: 51, that the only wise Wonderful God prepared Himself a body in which to dwell as His only begotten Son, and filled that body with His Holy Spirit. We also read that “God (the Father) is a Spirit and they that worship Him worship Him in Spirit and in Truth” John 4: 24 , because (Jesus)“He is the Way the Truth and the Life” John 14: 6, “no man comes to the Father but by Him” (God manifest in the flesh) how wonderful is God to come down to earth, live as a man and die for us, how wonderful! If you read in Revelation you will find that the Lamb walks within the throne and there is only one that sits on the throne, no mention of three.

Before I go on, I would like to point out two very pertinent Scriptures that you can ponder on, in the light of the other scriptures I have quoted. Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am: and he said, thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I Am hath sent me unto you.

In our modern English language it would read something like this. And God said to Moses, I Am That I Am: and God said, you (Moses) shall say to the children of Israel, I Am has sent me (Moses) to you.

When the Lord was on earth in a human form as the only begotten of the Father it was also very clear by the response of the then Jewish elders that they knew what the Lord meant when He answered them after they asked who he was. John 8:58 - Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. If you read the rest of the chapter they desire to stone him, why? Because the Lord said he was God or ‘I Am that I Am’.

Do you truly believe that God does not change? I do, and if God said that He is the only God and Father of us all, then who are we to doubt it. In the Old Testament there are many references to God being singular not plural and as stated, there is only one God and there is no other. We read in Deuteronomy 6: 4-5, Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Do you? Notice it says one Lord and yet the New Testament states that Jesus is Lord, the Old Testament states the Father is Lord so Jesus must be the Father, as Jesus stated to the scribes and Pharisees I Am that I Am. In fact Jesus is the Great I Am because He said so. He is the only wise God because the Bible tells us both in the old and new testaments that there is only one God.

In Isaiah 43:10-11, we read, “Ye are My witnesses saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen, that ye may know and believe Me, and understand that I Am He, before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me. I, even I Am the Lord, and beside me there is no Saviour.” But wait a minute! Jesus said He is the Saviour and if He is, then He is the Lord of Glory, God the Father.

We also read in Isaiah 44: 8 and 24, Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? Ye are even my witnesses. Is there a god beside Me? Yea, there is no god: I know not any. Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, and He that formed thee from thy womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things, that stretch forth the heavens alone, that spreadeth abroad the earth by Myself.

Again these verses use the singular form not plural as we are led to believe from the many church leaders that teach the doctrine of the trinity. Isaiah 45:5-6 states; I am the Lord and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me. That they may know from the rising of the sun, and the west that there is none beside Me. I am the Lord, and there is none else.

Now let’s look at a few more New Testament Scriptures: Matthew 1:23, Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is God with us. That agrees with Isaiah 9: 6-8.

John 1:1-14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was Life; and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe.

He (John the Baptist) was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He (God) was in the world, and the world was made by Him, and the world knew Him not. He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.

But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name (singular): Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

John 5: 7 For there are three that bare record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one (notice it mentions three but not as persons).
John 8: 24-27 I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins. They understood not that He spake to them of the Father. (If you don’t believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Father you will die in your sins that is very clear I think)
John 10: 30 I and my Father are one.
John 17: 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God.
John 20: 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, "My Lord and my God."
1 Timothy 2: 5 For there is one God, and mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (notice only one God).

There are not just a few verses of Scripture that declares the Lord God of Glory as one God, but the whole Bible in fact reveals that there is only one God. Biblical research proves the Scriptures, clearly stating there is but one God.

I believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord God Almighty, do you? Colossians 2: 9 For in Him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. When we see the Lord coming in the clouds we will know who He is because He is the First and the Last the Beginning and the Ending the Almighty, as found in the book of Revelation.

I do not believe that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit don’t exist, I do believe though that there is only one God who reveals Himself as He wills. If you take a look at all men who were created in the image of God you will find that we all have a body, soul and spirit because we are made in His image. There are three distinct parts of us but we are still only one individual in our understanding of what constitutes a person and the Bible says our conscience will bare us record Rom 2:15.

We mere humans cannot understand spiritually how wonderful, how mighty, how great and how loving God is without His Spirit enlightening us. The Bible says that God is a Spirit and they that worship Him, worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. John 4:24. It is by His Spirit He gives understand. How wonderful that God prepared Himself a body to dwell so that we could more fully understand Him in a personal way if we believe in Him.

Be very warned, he that condemns another will be condemned of God. There are many people that take the view that if you don't believe the trinity doctrine you are not saved. The trinity doctrine is just that, a doctrine! It has Biblical roots and human understanding, but that does not make it correct and certainly believing in it is not the way of salvation. The Lord Jesus Christ is the Way the Truth and the Life.
