A Theodolite is an instrument which measures vertical and horizontal angles and distances. It is used to survey accurately a large area of land. In the US and Canada it is also called a 'Transit' In the building industry in Australia it can be called a dumpy.

A theodolite is a clever piece of technology. Without the invention of many instruments we would need much more time or man-power to do certain jobs. There are many instruments and machines used in our daily lives to help us. Some are so simple that we don't even think about it as being a machine like axles, pulleys, levers, wedges, screws and inclined planes.
