The Federal Islamic Republic of the
Comoros is made up of three main islands and some smaller islands at the north
end of the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the east coast of the
African mainland. Its total land area, excluding the island of Mayotte, is
about 1,862 square kilometres (719 square miles).
The largest island is Grande Comore
with the highest point being Mount Karthala, an active volcano. Moheli is the
smallest of the main islands and the third island is Anjouan. A fourth
island, Mayotte, is a French dependency though the Comorian government
regards it as part of Comoros.
