Gambia is Africa's
smallest self-governing nation and occupies a narrow strip of territory cut in
two by the Gambia River. The nation extends inland for about 475 kilometres (295 miles) and ranges from
24 to 48 kilometres (15 to 30 miles) in width. Its
total area is 10,689 square kilometres (4,127 square miles). It is
completely surrounded by Senegal, except for its short coastline on the
Atlantic Ocean.
