The island republic of Sao Tome e Principe is located on the equator and consists of two main islands, Sao Tome and Principe and several small islets. The republic covers an area of 963 square kilometres (372 square miles), of which Sao Tome occupies 865 square kilometres (334 square miles). The highest point is the Pico de Sao Tome at 2,024 metres (6,640 feet). Portuguese is the official language but Creole dialects are also used.
