Antarctica is 5th in size
among the world's continents and covered by a vast ice sheet. It covers
about 14.2 million square km. It is divided into two parts, East Antarctica - a
high, ice-covered plateau, and West Antarctica area consists of
mountainous islands covered and merged together by ice. East and West Antarctica
are divided by the 3,057kilometre (1,900 mile) long Transantarctic Mountains.
