China's official name
is the People's Republic of China (in Chinese, Chung-huaJen-min Kung-ho-kuo)
and covers an area of more than 9,560,000 square kilometres (3,690,000 square miles). The world's
tallest mountains, the Himalayas, can be found here as well as one of the
world's greatest rivers, the Yangtze. It also boasts the well known
Taklimakan Desert. China has
many more natural regions of which some famous once are the Plateau of
Tibet, Kunlun Mountains, Tarim and Junggar basins in Xinjiang, all worth
while visiting.
Some major ranges
worth visiting are of course the Himalayas; Kunlun Shan; Tian Shan;
Yin Shan; Qin Ling Shan; and Nan Ling Shan. Only for the extreme fit, and
probably best left to postcard memories, are the following major peaks:
Everest, Namzha Parwa, and Gurla Mandhada.
China's official
language is Mandarin Chinese and their monetary unit is 1 Renminibi (yuan)
= 100 fen, which is important to have if you intend to do some shopping in
one of these magnificent cities; Beijing, Wu-han, Canton, Harbin, Shen-yang,
Tianjin, or delightful Shanghai.
