The Republic of
Indonesia consists of 13,677 islands that cover 1,919,443 square
kilometres (741,101 square miles). Indonesia's five main islands are Sumatra;
Java; Celebes (Sulawesi); two thirds of Borneo (Kalimantan); and the
western portion of New Guinea, Irian Jaya.
Some interesting
places to visit are Mountain Ranges Barisan (Sumatra), Muller (Borneo),
Maoke (Irian Jaya). The highest peak is Puncak Jaya, 5,030 metres (16,503 feet), and the largest lake is Toba. Three major rivers are Barito,
Kapuas, Mahakam. Some wonderful cities are, Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and
Bandung.
Indonesia's major
languages are Bahasa Indonesia (official), English (laws are published in
English as well as in Bahasa Indonesia), Javanese, Sundanese, Madurese,
and Minang.
