Cyprus is an island nation in the
Mediterranean Sea with an area of 9,251 square kilometres (3,571 square
miles).
The Troodos Mountains in the south,
Kyrenia Mountains in the north, the Mesaoria Plain in between and the
coastal plains that surround almost the entire country are main land
features of the island. Mount Olympus is the island's highest point,
located in the Troodos range, has a height of 953 metres (6,406
feet). Many castles dating from the time of the Crusades can be found in
the Kyrenia Range.
Cyprus has a gorgeous Mediterranean
climate. The majority of Cypriots are of Greek descent and speak Greek and make up
approximately 95 percent of the total population. There are also Turkish
communities on the north of the island. Greek and Turkish are the official
languages. Tourism is a strong contributor to the economy.
