Although the Netherlands is one of the smallest countries in Europe, it has played an important role in the history of  Europe over time and still plays a substantial role in European affairs today, being a major gateway to Europe by sea, land and air traffic.

It is bordered by Belgium, Germany and the North Sea. At one time a great deal of the country was under water. The Dutch have become well known for their reclamation of the sea, swamps and shallow lakes, to provide land for farming and housing.
