Where else can you
find the legendary Rock of Gibraltar but at the southern tip of Spain. The
peninsula is shaped like a finger pointing to the coast of Africa, only 23
kilometres (14
miles) away. This enchanting peninsula is Britain's crown
colony of Gibraltar since 1704 and Britain's chief naval base on the
route through the Suez Canal to the exotic Far East. WW II saw Gibraltar
as a naval base for the Allied forces and from 1969 to 1985 there was no
land access from Spain due to government disagreements.
