Svalbard & Jan Mayen

estimate population 2,200 - Capital: Longyearbyen

Svalbard is a Norwegian possession in the Arctic Ocean and is made up of Spitsbergen archipelago, east islands, and Bear Island (Bjolrnoya). Svalbard was given its name by Vikings in the 12th century. It was explored by Willem Barents in 1596. The delightful capital city is Longyearbyen and a lovely tourist destination.

Jan Mayen Island lies between Iceland and Svalbard. It was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1607 and rediscovered by Jan Mayen, a well travelled Dutchman. It has been the centre of whaling and sealing expeditions for a long time.
