Svalbard was given its name by Vikings in the 12th century. It was explored by Willem Barents in 1596. The delightful capital city is Longyearbyen and a lovely tourist destination.
Jan Mayen Island lies between Iceland and Svalbard. It was discovered by Henry Hudson in 1607 and rediscovered by Jan Mayen, a well travelled Dutchman. It has been the centre of whaling and sealing expeditions for a long time.
