Tuvalu was also known as the
Ellice Islands and are located 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) northeast of
Australia and have a total land area of only 24 square kilometres (9 1/4 square miles). Funafuti Atoll is the capital and main port. The other islands are
Nanumaga, Nanumea, Niulakita, Niutao, Nui, Nukufetau, Nukulaelae, and Vaitupu.
